Connect External Monitor Properly
For connecting your system to an external monitor you need to correctly identify the DVI or VGA ports in both of them. Assure that you are having enough cables and adapter to connect the system to external monitor. Verify whether the system and external monitor are having same type of videos ports or not. You need to connect one end of the connecting cord to system video port and other to that of external monitor without any loose connection.
Configure the Settings
You need to properly configure the external monitor after connecting it to your system. When you connect the system to external displays using HDMI or S-video channels, you need to do additional settings to receive the video on to the external monitor. You can connect the external monitor as an extension of your system using the function keys.
You need to satisfy the power requirements for both your system and external monitor while functioning together. Check the laptop battery condition. If it is not fully charged you need to provide power support from main supply via AC adapter. You need to provide sufficient power for external monitor also.
